The CPMR took part in the first conference on “EU Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian region – Development opportunities for regional and local authorities” organised in Rijeka on 5 December 2014 at the invitation of Ivan Jakovcic, Member of the European Parliament and Rapporteur of the EP for the European Strategy for the Adriatic Ionian Region.

The aim of the meeting was to launch a deep discussion on the development opportunities offered by the implementation of the strategy to regional and local authorities.

Among other speakers, Ivo Josipović, President of the Republic of Croatia, took the floor at the opening together with Valter Flego, President of the Istrian Region and Zlatko Komadina, President of Primorsko-Goranska. The European Commission was represented by Giannantonio Ballette, Coordinator for macro regional strategies at DG REGIO.

“The CPMR is currently in the process of opening up to the Balkans; following the model applied in the Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic regions, we hope to contribute to a democratisation and decentralisation process in this Region,” stated Patrick Anvroin, CPMR Director in charge of the Balkans and Black Sea, during his speech after also mentioning the success of the running initiative of Vasco da Gama and the possibilities that this represents for Adriatic Ionian training institutions.
