The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, has recalled the key role of the CPMR in developing Cohesion Policy.
Mr Barnier, who was European Commissioner in charge of Regional Policy from 1999-2004, made the statement during a live debate hosted by Euronews to mark 30 years of the policy.
During the debate, streamed live on 21 March, 2018, Mr Barnier said: “How can we save Cohesion Policy through public debate? With several associations like the CPMR, we promoted some ideas. We decided to make a parallel between the Lisbon Agenda and Regional Policy. We decided to focus on the major European challenges, this was a bottom up approach in order to safeguard and protect this policy…”
