On 21st January, the President of Region-Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and the CPMR Intermediterranean Commission, Michel Vauzelle met the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Fatallah Sijilmassi. Jean-Claude Gayssot, Vice-President of Languedoc-Roussillon, and delegate of the Intermediterranean Commission Political Bureau for macro-regional and sea basin strategies also participated in this meeting.
In view of the 20th Anniversary of the Barcelona process launched in 1995, discussions focused on the upcoming challenges for the Mediterranean, the Euro-Med agenda, the current geo-political situation and future strategies, clarifying the potential for strengthening cooperation on concrete initiatives among the Union for the Mediterranean, the Intermediterranean Commission and its regional governments.
As part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2013 between the Union for the Mediterranean and the Intermediterranean Commission, four main possible areas of cooperation were underlined among others: integrated territorial development, youth employment, mobility, education and vocational training related to the blue economy, the social and solidarity economy, and energy efficiency. Possible future meetings and key events for the Mediterranean that could lead to more synergies, – such as the MED COP 21 conference that will be held in Marseille next 4-5 June 2015, were also raised during the discussions.
